Storage unit sizes: what fits in a 5x5 to a 10x30
A 5x5 holds a dresser and a few boxes, a 5x10 fits a one-bedroom apartment's furniture, a 10x10 fits about two bedrooms plus a living room, a 10x20 fits a home of three or four bedrooms, and a 10x30 fits a five-bedroom house. Most units are about 8 feet tall; size up if you'll need to reach things.

Small units
5x5 (25 sq ft, about a small walk-in closet): a dresser, a small mattress set and several boxes, or seasonal items like decorations and camping gear.
5x10 (50 sq ft, about a walk-in closet): the furniture from a one-bedroom apartment or dorm, such as a queen mattress set, love seat, dresser, TV, bike and boxes.
Medium units
10x10 (100 sq ft, about half a one-car garage): two bedrooms' worth of furniture plus a family room. It's the most popular size nationally.
10x15 (150 sq ft, a little smaller than a one-car garage): about three bedrooms plus large items like a piano, couches or appliances.
Large units
10x20 (200 sq ft, a one-car garage): a three- to four-bedroom home, including a dining set, appliances and washer and dryer. It can also hold a car.
10x30 (300 sq ft, about a car and a half): a fully furnished five-bedroom house. It's the largest size at most facilities.
Sizing from your moving truck
SpareFoot's rule of thumb is that you need a unit about one size smaller than your truck: a 15-foot truck load fits a 10x10, a 20-foot truck a 10x15, and a 25-foot truck a 10x20.
If you'll need to reach things in the back, rent one size larger and leave a walkway. Ask the price of the next size up; the difference is sometimes small.
